We, the Roman Catholic Community of St. Anastasia Parish, profess our belief in the Gospel message and mission of Jesus Christ. As disciples of Jesus we recognize our call to evangelization, to proclaim and give witness to our faith. We are a life affirming community committed to the Eucharist, worship, faith formation and shared service in our community and beyond.
It was Father Patrick F. MacAran, having served at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Tuxedo, who saw the need for a church in the Harriman area. Originally known as Turners, Harriman was a railroad depot and a transfer point, and it seemed a fitting location. Land was purchased from local families, and a barn was raised to conduct mass until a permanent church could be built.
In 1899, the Parish of St. Anastasia was established, and the building of the permanent church could begin. Many local residents came to help out, including railroad workers, storekeepers, farmers, mill workers, businessmen and “anybody and everybody who could give some time to this holy work…” according to the program from St. Anastasia’s 100th anniversary.
Twelve years later, additional land was purchased for the school and convent, and in 1914, the St. Anastasia Parish School begins.
Throughout the years, St. Anastasia saw 12 beloved pastors come and go. Many parishioners today still recall Father Boehning who was heavily involved in the church’s 90th jubilee, and our recent Pastor, Father Reynolds, who retired in 2011. With his enthusiasm and zest for his work, we welcome Father Michael Keane.
St. Anastasia Church provides a wide range of ministries for every age, and for every need. Whether you have been with the parish for years, or new to the area, we welcome you to browse through the site, get to know the parishioners who devote their time and talent to not only to answer the call of Jesus, but to also help their neighbors.
